Impressions Of Faith
Great quality entertainment takes the form of many different genres, from musicals to plays as well as others such as stand up comedy, cabaret, live music and sketch shows. All of these can be found on a stage, making theatre one of the best forms of entertainment money can buy.
And if it’s great theatre you are after then look no further than London’s West End. The United Kingdom has a great tradition of theatre (after all, this is the country that was home to William Shakespeare), from Manchester, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Newcastle all the way down to London, there is something for everyone on offer. However, it is in London that British Theatre truly comes to life, it being the place that houses over forty different venues with countless shows and performers from around the world showing off their talents.
Since centuries gone by, the West End of London has housed some world class venues, from the world famous Old Vic, with Artistic Direction from Kevin Spacey, to others such as The Garrick Theatre, The Duke of York’s Theatre and more. Many of the theatres date back to the Victorian times, but others can trace their routes back even further. If not for the Second World War, many more of these historic buildings could still contain their original designs, but due to the bombs of that era, plus fires that plagued many of the venues in the nineteenth century, this has been reduced in number. However, many of the facades that the theatres can boast still retain their original features so that a trip to the theatre can be a trip through history.
It seems fitting that the venues in the West End contain shows which are themselves enriched with history, when the theatres themselves date back to the time in which they are set. Take the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane – this is a venue that can trace its origins back to the 1600s (though the current building was constructed in 1812). It is currently the home to the West End production of Oliver! with Rowan Atkinson (soon to be replaced by Omid Djalili), which means that the theatre existed right in the time that the show is set. It is easy to imagine the character of Oliver happening upon the theatre in his nineteenth century setting.
The West End contains shows that inspire all kinds of minds and can display imaginative spectacles. So get your London theatre ticket now and experience what is on offer.
